Honora Edwards

with one comment

Honora Edwards is the writing name of a long-term patient of Dr. John Bowlby, pioneer of attachment theory.  In sessions that began in 1957 when she was fourteen, she challenged his basic ideas about helping children and parents. Together they evolved a psychotherapy that rescued her from the most damaging childhood Dr. Bowlby said he had come across.

John Bowlby was later to define successful therapy as becoming a ‘good enough parent’ to enable his patients to explore their life from this secure base. With his help Honora won a university degree  and enjoyed a life-long career as a teacher.

Dr. Bowlby became her godfather and urged her to write this account of their shared journey.

  1. I wonder what Dr. Bowlby would think about parenting ideas today? Do you think he would be pleased at how his theories have been taken up or despairing about the state of Britain’s children?
