Julie Wheelwright is the programme director of the MA Creative Writing City University London. She is the author of Amazons and Military Maids, a history of female-to-male cross-dressing and The Fatal Lover: Mata Hari and the Myth of Women in Espionage. Her most recent book, Captive Child, Mother Superior: The Search for Esther Wheelwright, will be published next year. An award-winning broadcaster, feature writer and literary critic, she lives in London with her two daughters.

Her current interests are: nonfiction writing and its multifarious forms, family history and memoir (how and why people do it), eighteenth century captives narratives, early Canadian history, intelligence history of the Cold War.
